"Pauline Bewick has caught the real spirit of the South
Pacific with a wonderful blending of images and colors that capture so
much of it's feelings and moods."
James Michener, author and noted art collector.
Excerpt from the introduction to Pauline Bewick's
The South Seas and a Box of Paints.
In
1989, Pauline Bewick left Ireland with her two daughters and an armful
of paper, watercolours and sketchbooks and headed for the South Pacific
where she spent 2 years painting, sketching and writing. Captivated
by the warmth and the exuberance of the local people and the liberating
lifestyle.
Bewick's collection of paintings and sketches from this colourful period,
brings to life all the beauty and sensuality of the South Seas.

Bewick:
...I bought thirteen hand-bound sketch books and 365 handmade papers
made form acid-free pulps, banana leaves, flax, cotton, etc. All in
dull shades, as pure white dazzles the eyes in the bright sun.
I also kept a diary of that year...collecting legends and living with
the friends we had made, becoming part of the Maori culture, part of
their extended family.
